Railroads and Italians

Italians and the Erie Railroad in the late 19th and early  20th  centuries  During the 1880s Italians were solicited by railroad representatives to work in the railroad repair facilities.  Erie Railroad page

2   The John A. Mango Book "Coppa Monte" includes a history of  Italian immigrants who worked for the American Railroads.  The focus is on the Erie Railroad and Susquehanna, PA because my father and many other immigrant Italians worked for this railroad at aforementioned location during the period mentioned.  In the early 1880s as immigrants exited the Castle Garden immigration depot;  they were solicited by railroad representatives to work in the railroad repair facilities.  (Castle Garden is now known as Battery Park at the foot of Manhattan in New York)  Susquehanna page

3   The Italian Army and the North African campaign  During World War Two, I was a school boy American born of Italian immigrant parents. I can still recall the Saturday matinee and the newsreel coverage of that war. Specifically I vividly remember the manner in which the Italian soldier was portrayed.  Scenes from North Africa, of thousands of Italian soldiers surrendering to a handful of British tanks. This newsreel bias implied that Italian soldiers would rather surrender to the enemy than fight. This seems to be the impression left with many in American society today. Italian Army
